A Race Against Blindness: Adventure Driven for a Cure

A Race Against Blindness is on the cusp of funding a clinical trial for a revolutionary new gene therapy that could help children who are going blind due to a rare disease. Their goal is to cure retinitis pigmentosa caused by Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) – a devastating cause of childhood blindness. The medical research involved in vision saving treatment and restorative therapy is advancing rapidly. However, private funding, such as the money they raise, remains the main driver for much of this innovation. This mission is incredibly personal to Steve and Kristina Johnston who founded the nonprofit when they discovered that their son, Luke, is going blind.

“When we found out our son was losing his vision and had just a few short years before He’s legally blind, We made the choice to show him as much of the beauty in the world as we could. Traveling in an adventure vehicle (specifically a van the first time around) was an easy choice as a way to see the most unique and beautiful places that you can’t see any other way. As we moved forward with fundraising, we wanted to find a way for others to also be able to have those types of experiences and to be able to create their own visual memories just like we have with Luke.
